Penang Tint VLT & Heat Rejection Calculator
Film VLT is not the number a roadblock meter reads. This works out the combined figure through glass and film together, and tells you whether it passes.
Short answer. Combined VLT = film VLT × glass VLT. A 70% film on 85% factory glass measures about 60% — which fails the 70% windscreen limit. Always check the combined figure, not the film's rating.
Calculate
⚠ Estimate only. Legal limits must be VERIFIED against current JPJ rules, and only a meter reading on your glass is definitive.
How to read the result
If the combined VLT sits below the limit for that window, the fitted film is not compliant — even though the film's own rating looked fine. The fix is a lighter film, not a different shop.
TSER is the heat figure. At the same VLT, higher TSER means a cooler cabin. It is the number worth negotiating on once legality is settled.
Frequently asked questions
How is window tint VLT calculated?
Multiply the film's VLT by the glass VLT. A 70% film on 85% factory glass gives about 60% combined, which is why film VLT and final measured VLT are different numbers.
What VLT is legal in Malaysia?
At least 70% on the front windscreen and 50% on front side windows. Rear side windows and the rear windscreen have no VLT limit for private vehicles.
Is this calculator a legal guarantee?
No. It estimates the combined VLT so you can sanity-check a quote. Only a meter reading on your actual glass is definitive, which is why we measure and record it after fitting.
