Paint Protection Film in Penang

PPF is a clear urethane layer bonded over your paint. It takes the stone chips, trolley scrapes and door dings that would otherwise reach the clear coat — and on modern films, light swirls self-heal in the sun.

What it protects against

Highway stone chips on the bonnet and bumper. Car park contact. Sea air and salt on cars kept near the coast. Bird droppings and tree sap, which etch clear coat within days in this heat if left.

It does not stop a car park dent and it is not a substitute for washing the car. It is a sacrificial layer over the most expensive part of the paint.

TPU, not PVC

Quality PPF is thermoplastic polyurethane. It stays clear, flexes around body lines and self-heals minor marks with heat. Cheap PVC film is rigid, yellows quickly under tropical UV, and can be miserable to remove years later.

Ask which the shop is quoting. In this climate the difference shows up within a year or two.

Coverage options

Front-end coverage — bonnet, front bumper, front fenders and mirrors — is the value option, because that's where nearly all stone damage lands. Expect RM 3,500–6,500.

Full-body coverage wraps every painted panel with edges tucked where possible. Expect RM 12,000–25,000 depending on the car and film series.

Order of operations

PPF goes on before ceramic coating, not after. The correct sequence is: paint correction, then PPF, then a coating applied over the film.

Coat the paint first and you have to strip the coating for the film to bond. Shops that do it in the wrong order are guessing.

Frequently asked questions

How much does PPF cost in Malaysia?

Front-end coverage typically runs RM 3,500–6,500 and full-body RM 12,000–25,000, depending on the vehicle, the film series and how much edge-wrapping is involved.

Does PPF turn yellow?

Quality TPU film resists yellowing. Cheap PVC film yellows quickly under tropical UV, which is why the material type matters more than the price.

Is PPF better than ceramic coating?

They do different jobs. PPF is physical impact protection; coating is a chemical, hydrophobic surface layer. If you can only do one and you drive highways, PPF on the front end protects more value.

Should PPF go on before or after ceramic coating?

Before. Correct the paint, apply PPF, then coat over the film. Applying coating first prevents the film bonding properly.

Does PPF really self-heal?

Quality TPU films self-heal light swirl marks and fine scratches with heat — often just from being parked in the sun. Deeper cuts through the film do not heal.
